Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in York
The book tells sixteen true tales to make your blood run cold
After the potato famine in Ireland many people moved to other countries to find work. Many arrived in York with little or no money, living conditions were overcrowded and unhygienic and "out of this festering, bawdy, drunken slum came tales of the most dreadful kind." The book tells sixteen true tales to make your blood run cold. The slums of York are not the only culprits here; the middle classes also get in on the act as well as tales of the drunken hangman. A good book if you like this kind of thing. The book has 174 pages.

Margaret Clitherow Saint Of York
This book is a short biography (53 pages)of Margaret Clitherow, the wife of a butcher, who lived in York's famous medieval street the Shambles
In 1586 she was accused of harbouring catholic priests in her house. She refused to plead guilty or not guilty, probably because this would force her family to be called as witnesses in her trial. The "crimes" of harbouring priests and of refusing to plead both carried the death penalty. Margaret was crushed to death beneath a heavy door witch was laid on top of her with rocks placed on top of it. One of the houses in the Shambles is now a shrine to St. Margaret Clitherow.

The City of York Companion
Written like a guidebook that takes you through different parts of the city one at a time
You explore the aria surrounding the Minster for example, then you move on to another part of the city. The book is 175 pages and gives you a good knowledge of the history of York and the buildings you see all around you. The text in the book is written in a Viking style font, which I didn't like. This is a good book if you want to get to know York and its buildings better.
